The Car
The Car was originally created by custom car builder George Barris for the
70's Hollywood horror movie ofthe same name. Starring James Brolin, the story
was about a mysterious and evil, seemingly indestructible car that terrorises
a small New Mexican Town. The local Sheriff fights a fierce battle
against this sinister black sedan, and eventually the evil machine is defeated
(Left - the original Barris CAR).
Originally four of these vehicles were created for filming and most were destroyed in the process. At least two replicas were subsequently built here in the UK over the years, both of which still exist.
One of them was created a few years ago by Essex based Ray Bloomfield who decided to create his own version of this movie legend. This particular Car replica ended up being sold and now resides up in Scotland, where its current owner is in the process of refurbishing it.

Feb 2000 Rear Side Frame Fitted
Ray decided to embark on building a new, more accurate version of this four wheel death-machine. So he got his welding gear out and began to construct his new ride. The base vehicle for his project is not quite what you might expect - for under that sheet metal beats a Teutonic heart in the form of a rare classic Mercedes 250CE Coupe! |
Feb 2000 Front Sheet Metal Fitted Scaling up measurements from photographs, Ray constructed a steel framework around the unsuspecting Merc, then began cladding it in a new mild steel skin |

November 2002 Rear View Back view of the CAR - now riding on 295/50/15 tires on chrome smoothies, it now looks just like the original!

Top View November 2002 At this time the CAR was still not on the road as the interior was still to do, but it is already looking awesome at over 17-1/2 ft long and 6ft 6" wide. Bumpers are still to be chromed, when Ray can find a chrome-plater with a tank big enough to put them in! |
